Diocese of California
"The gifts he gave were that some would be
apostles, some prophets,
some evangelists, some pastors and teachers,
to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of
Christ,
until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son
of God,
to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ."

Instructor: The Rev. Kathy Trapani, Associate Rector, St. Timothy’s, Danville
This workshop will focus on the language and theology of Eucharistic prayers to renew and refresh Eucharistic Visitors in their ministry. There will be opportunity to ask questions and share rxperiences and concerns.
Instructor: The Rev. Laina Casillas, Deacon, St. Michael & All Angels, Concord
How did it happen that one sector of the Christian world in America ran off with the language of evangelism? Why do Episcopalians make nervous jokes about “the ‘e’ word” and dance around the work of evangelizing? Dn Lania Casillas is passionate about reclaiming the word and the practice for Episcopalians in the Bay Area. Participants in this workshop will learn some simple tools and approaches and will have the chance to catch Laina’s enthusiasm.
Chant for Deacons

Pastoral Care for Those with Chronic Illness and/or Pain
Instructor: The Rev. David R. Martin, Director of MAIN, Hospital Chaplain, Kaiser, San RafaelThere are many among us who suffer from chronic illness or pain or both. Often they need ongoing spiritual support and pastoral care. The Rev. David Martin will share from his experience as director of Marin Aids Interfaith Network and chaplain at Kaiser Hospital in San Rafael.
Instructor: The Rev. Eric Nefstead, BCC Director,Sojourn Chaplaincy, San Francisco General Hospital
We all face death. Preparing for death is a profoundly spiritual process. It is also a physical process, often closely intertwined with healthcare institutions. In this seminar, participants will learn important skills in helping people (oneself and others) in preparing for death and caring for the bereaved. Participants will be given information on "Advanced Directives for Healthcare," which the Episcopal Church expects its clergy to understand, and teach to congregants. Participants will also address ways of providing pastoral care to the dying and the bereaved. Participants are asked to bring one dollar ($1) to pay for materials.
Deacons as Fund Raisers
Instructor: Julia McCray-Goldsmith, Co-ordinator of Faith Formations, Diocese of CaliforniaHow is that new ministry initiative actually going to happen and sustain itself after the Vestry’s seed money is spent? You are going to have to do it! So come and learn how. Episcopalians may be more anxious about raising money than doing evangelism. Julia McCray-Goldsmith has done community development work in some of the poorest areas of Central American and has been a Development Staffer (i.e. fund raiser) for CDSP. She sees the methods and opportunity to raise funds for active ministry to the poor, the weak, the sick, and the lonely as a form of ministry itself. She is excited about sharing skills and information with deacons and others who want to learn how to fund ministry initiatives in congregations.
